5 Tips to Help Canadian Riders Survive the Winter

Winter in Canada tests a rider’s patience and their gear cupboard. The roads get crusty, the temps dip, and suddenly we’re all experts at waiting. Here’s a quick, no-nonsense survival guide to get you through the off-season and roll out fast when the thaw hits.

1) Put the bike to bed properly

Give it a wash, dry it, lube the chain, and top up with fresh fuel + stabilizer. Hook up a smart battery tender, check coolant, and bump tire pressure before storage. If you’ve got stands, get the weight off the tires; if not, just avoid flat spots by rolling it a touch every few weeks. A breathable cover is your friend—garage dust isn’t patina.

2) Show your gear some love

Off-season is gear-spa season. Pull liners and give them a proper wash, wipe down shells, and condition leather so it’s supple for spring. Inspect stitching, zippers, and armour pockets—replace anything tired now, not on your first ride back. If your faceshield’s scratched or your visor fogs at the thought of April, upgrade: RKT 240-SERIES Pinlock® 70 Lenseskeep things clear when the mornings are still frosty (they drop straight into the RKT 240).

3) Build a shoulder-season kit that actually works

Dry winter days do happen—be ready for a cheeky rip when the salt’s washed away. Think layers and waterproofing:

4) Keep the rider sharp (from the couch)

Swap the gym for YouTube ride time. Queue up trip recaps to keep the stoke alive, then mix in riding tip videos—vision, body position, braking drills, slow-speed control. Jot notes, save routes you’d like to try, and build a spring watchlist you can turn into a weekend plan the moment the roads clean up.

5) Plan next year’s big trips

Pick destinations and dates now while calendars (and ferries/campsites) are wide open. Map primary and bailout routes, note fuel stops, weather windows, and border/park details. Make a pre-trip service checklist (oil, filters, pads/flush, chain + sprockets, tires) and order anything you’ll need early. If your jacket’s tired or your lid’s due for replacement, sort it now—sizes and colours don’t sit around forever.

Winter will do what winter does. You don’t have to hibernate with it. Prep the bike, refresh the kit, keep your skills warm with smart videos, and when that first dry weekend hits, you’ll be rolling while everyone else is still hunting for their gloves.
